Instructional Philosophy: Science is a hands-on field of study. As such, students will be expected to fully participate in all activities in and out of the classroom. Typically, the day will begin with a writing assignment that will stretch the students understanding of concepts covered in class. Following a discussion of their responses, the days lesson will be introduced along with the standard(s) it covers. A work period will allow the students to put into practice the days lesson while allowing me to focus my attention on providing additional help where it is needed among the class. Labs will allow the students to explore and reinforce what they have learned in the classroom through hands-on activities while learning to work together in groups. The class will end with a review of the days lesson. Any assignment turned in after the due date will be subject to a 10 point deduction for each day or partial day it is late. Assignments turned in 5 days or more after the due date will receive a grade of 0 (zero). Major Course Goals: Major course topics include: Ecology and Ecosystems Biodiversity Environmental Quality and Concerns Major Course Projects: Typically, one major project will be required each 9 week grading period. These projects will require the student to work alone over an extended period to accomplish the task. A complete description of each project will be sent home with the student for the parent to see at the time it is assigned. The projects will allow the student to report their work through their choice of formats; for example, oral reports, written reports, and models are a few of the report options. Classroom Expectations Students should be in their seats ready to work on the Science Question of the Day before the tardy bell rings. Students late to class will be given a tardy notice and excessive tardies will be handled according to the school disciplinary code. Students should come prepared to learn every day. That preparation includes having the material necessary to succeed, including all books, workbooks, pens, notebooks, and assignments. Students should bring their own pens/pencils and paper. Blue or black ink or pencil will be accepted on any assignment, unless specifically changed by me. Student Behavior Expectations Student behavior in class includes remaining in your seat unless given permission to get up and no talking without permission. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed to be used without my expressed permission. Students who use their cell phones without my permission will be expected to give their device to me to be held until the end of the period. Cell phones will not be taken from the room when a student goes to the bathroom. Course Assessment Plan: The basic grading schedule for my class is: Major Assignments 50% Intermediate Assignments 30% Minor Assignments 20% Total: 100% Major assignments include tests and labs. Projects count as multiple grades in several areas; for example, a typical project might count as a homework and test grade, two lab grades; or, a classwork, homework and test grade. Intermediate assignments are most often classwork. Minor assignments include quizzes, SQUIDs, and homework I encourage my students to read. Therefore, when a student reads a book and provides a book report to document their accomplishment, I will consider the book report as a 20 point bonus to a single grade in any category except projects. Maximum of 40 points per quarter. You must use the form provided by Mr. Roach and the book must be started after the beginning of the school year. Also, the book cant be one that youve read for another class. The book you read for extra credit must be no less than 100 points below your Lexile level. You will receive 5 points for every 100 pages in the book. Example: 199 pages = 5 points; 235 pages = 10 points; 400 pages and above = 20 points . Supplies and Materials Needed: Blue or black ink pens, medium or fine point. NO sharpie or other permanent markers. Pencils Highlighters (optional) 3-ring binder, 1 inch, spiral notebook, composition book for taking notes Paper for taking notes. Colored pencils (NOT MARKERS) Extra help: I am available on an as needed basis for additional help after school. After school sessions must be arranged in advance with the student providing their own transportation. After school help sessions must be concluded and the student picked up before 4:30 p.m. Teacher Contact Info: I can be reached via my cell phone at 803-257-4159. I prefer texting.
